Research Services
Members of the Curatorial Team are available to assist with providing access to the wealth of information contained within the John Price Memorial Library. We can assist with simple enquiries via post and email. For more in depth research enquiries we would recommend making an appointment to visit the Library’s Reading Room.

The Reading Room
The Reading Room is based on the ground floor of the Library building, and can be used by anyone wishing to undertake their own research using material from the collections. To help better facilitate your visit, we would recommend looking at our online catalogue to identify any resources you would like to have prepared ready for use during your visit.
Opening Times
The Reading Room is open for research visits by prior appointment only, available Monday to Friday 9.30am-4.30pm, subject to staff availability. Please get in touch and we will try our best to accommodate you.
Please note that on some occasions throughout the year access to the Reading Room will not be available due to staff shortages or other unforeseen circumstances. We therefore strongly recommend making an appointment to use the Reading Room prior to making any accommodation or travel arrangements. We will do our best to accommodate all requests for access.
To Make an Appointment
To make an appointment to use the Reading Room please use our Curatorial Enquiry Form. When completing the form please provide details of the dates you would like to visit the Reading Room, along with any specific materials from the collections you would like to use. If you are not sure of specific items please give an outline of the research you are undertaking and we will provide assistance in identifying possible items of interest.
Postal and Email Enquiries
Our postal and email enquiry service aims to answer simple enquiries regarding the Museum’s collection as well as general Tramway history. Due to limited staff capacity and the volume of enquiries we receive, it is not always possible to respond immediately. We answer enquiries in the order in which they were received, and will endeavour to reply to all enquiries within 14 working days of receiving them.
For email enquiries please use our Curatorial Enquiry Form and for postal enquiries please write to:

Online Catalogue
Our catalogue allows users to search all of the Museum’s collections that are currently available to access online.
The catalogue looks a bit different to the old databases, but now allows you to do combined searches rather than having to go back and forth between multiple databases.
If you use the simple search tool, this searches for items in the collection based on that word being in the title field on the catalogue. This may not bring back all the items which you might be looking for. We would recommend trying the advanced or expert search features as these will allow you to search by Subject and Title words, as well as other fields such as Author.
If at any point whilst using the catalogue you need help, click the blue question mark symbol in the upper right corner. This will open a help feature which explains features of the catalogue.
Access the National Tramway Museum Online Catalogue.
We hope you find the new catalogue more user friendly. We would appreciate any comments you might have on how the catalogue is working and whether you’re having any difficulties using it. If you would like to give us some feedback then send us an email using our Curatorial Enquiry Form.
