Lawrence being presented with his certificate

Lawrence Napier has been a volunteer conductor at Crich Tramway Village for more than 40 years but on Friday 7th August he hung up his ticket punch and cash bag for the last time, having reached retirement age.

Lawrence’s life-time interest in trams was prompted by him being brought up in Glasgow in the 1940s and 50s, when the electric tramcar was the main form of transport. He crewed one of our classic Glasgow trams during his last week as a conductor. Unfortunately we could not provide a Glasgow Standard for his last duty, but Leeds 180 made an acceptable substitute.

When the last service tram of the day left for the 5pm duty it was closely followed by 180, now out of service but driven by Lawrence Napier. A very appropriate way to bring the curtain down on 40 years of volunteer conducting!
