The Ultimate Driving Experience

This unique package allows you to spend a whole day learning how to drive one of our Vintage Trams in a stunning location.

Your day

On arrival you will be greeted by one of our instructors and taken into the Museum. The day begins over refreshments with a chance to get to know our expert instructors.

During the morning session they will take you through tram driving theory, health and safety, how the tramcar works, power and breaking, current collection, track work and operating methods. You will then move out onto the line for a tour of the driving route.

After lunch and under the watchful eye of the instructors you have a "hands on" afternoon at the controls of one of our fleet of vintage trams. The mile long track offers a chance to put the theory into practice navigating the points, tram stops and the Derbyshire hills.

Each person will usually have time to complete 4 or more round trips There will also be opportunities to perform Guard duties on ‘the back platform’, including trolley turning (where fitted), bell signals, and changing points.

Family and friends are welcome to join you on drive and can get involved by helping turn the trolley pole or just enjoy the ride. Alternatively they can take time to explore the Museum and all it has to offer.

The day ends when you return the trams to the depot, and re-assemble in the Lecture Room for refreshments, de-briefing, and presentation of Driving Certificates.

Once you have the beginner’s course under your belt, why not follow it up with the advanced course. The day is very similar to the beginner’s course with less theory and a wider selection of trams to choose from.

How to book

The cost of the beginners' course for 2013 is £288. Gift Vouchers are available now. This price includes all meals and refreshments for you and a guest and a goody bag. Other guests are welcome to join you on the day at an extra cost. Please advise numbers in advance.
