1940s Weekend

TRAMWAY VILLAGE PREPARES FOR WAR

Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 August

Hundreds of re-enactors in WWII uniforms and 1940s clothing, together with their wartime vehicles will be invading Crich Tramway Village on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 August for one of the biggest events of the year - the 1940s themed weekend.

The trams are being readied for war. Anti-blast netting covers the windows, the destination boards are blank so as to confuse enemy spies and the lights fitted with blackout masks. Sandbags are piled up near the entrance and identity cards and ration books are ready to be issued.

Expect air-raid warnings and the sound of low flying aircraft. Beware the spivs selling black market goods and watch out for unexploded bombs. Visitors must always be ready to show their identity card or risk being arrested as a spy! Wartime songs will be belted out by an authentic E.N.S.A. concert party throughout the weekend. The Red Lion public house will be serving drinks and wartime styled meals.

Christine Brown, event organiser said, “Visitors will feel as if they have stepped through a time portal back to the 1940s. It will be as historically authentic, with plenty of entertainment throughout the day to appeal to all the family. Children in particular will be fascinated to see this picture of life in wartime Britain. Anyone who gets into the spirit of the event by dressing in 1940’s clothes will be rewarded with a special reduced entry price of only £6.”

On Saturday evening, 11th August, the Tramway Village will be open until late. The Red Lion will be serving, the trams running and an authentic E.N.S.A concert and 1940s dance.
