We want you to have a safe and enjoyable visit to the Tramway Village. The following information should help you, and your school, to do that.
What to wear
Crich Tramway Village is an outdoor attraction, so please ensure that children are dressed appropriately for the weather (waterproofs, sun hat, sun cream, etc).
When you arrive
Whenever possible a member of the Education Team will meet you at the entrance, where we can answer any questions and assist with booking in and payment. Please allow sufficient time for this process, especially if you have booked an Education Session. There are toilets at the entrance which can be used while the party leader is booking in. We suggest the pannies and halfpennies are given to group leaders to distribute. We will guide you to the classroom if you have booked Education Sessions.
Crates are available for storing lunch boxes, or they can be left on your coach. Please do not leave any valuables in the classroom or crates as they are not locked.
Education Sessions/Packs
A variety of facilitated Education Sessions are available for schools, details can be found on the website, or call the Education Department on 01773 854328. Sessions last between 45 minutes and one hour and incur an extra charge.
Education Packs are available, free, containing background information, teachers' notes and photocopiable worksheets.
A Maths Trail, Woodland Walk/Sculpture Trail and Jubilee Trail (orienteering) are free on request.
Our website is regularly updated with downloadable activities and information, and we have a variety of resources and equipment to loan during your visit, please call for details.
Risk assessment
We can supply a risk assessment guidance sheet, however, we strongly advise you to make your own risk assessment of the site. Complimentary tickets are available for you to do this. If you have booked Education Sessions we can provide more specific risk assessments for each of these.
Supervision
Children must be supervised at all times, and we ask that adults stay with the children during Education Sessions.
Eating areas
There are plenty of areas around the site suitable for picnics. If the weather is wet the bandstand can be used as well as the smaller shelters on the woodland walk. We will do our best to provide undercover eating areas when wet, although we cannot guarantee this.
The trams
The tram service is run to a timetable which is displayed on the board between Frederick's Ice Cream Parlour and the Eagle Press. The Duty Inspector is in overall charge of the site. The number of trams running varies depending on the number of volunteer crews available. Children are encouraged to ask the tram crews any questions they may have about the trams and they will give a talk about the tram you are riding on.
The exhibition halls
Children must not climb on to the trams in the exhibition hall or depots, or touch any of the displays. Equipment for the Maths Trail (metre rules, trundle wheels, pencils, clipboards) can be found in the plastic crate under the leaflet stand in the Trade Exhibition. Please replace after use.
Play areas, Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail
Special care needs to be taken in and around the play areas. The indoor play area is designed for children between 4 and 10 years (or under 145 cms) and the soft play area for toddlers between 18 months and 4 years. Please be aware that there may be very young children playing in these areas and we ask that consideration is given to other visitors both here and elsewhere on the site.
The ant sculpture is designed to be climbed on, however the other sculptures aren’t, so please respect this. Please note that dogs are allowed on site and although we request that any mess is cleaned up, not all owners are responsible.
- Please don’t allow the children to disturb the wood ant's nest.
Shopping
We suggest that children bring at least £2 pocket money which can be spent in the gift or sweet shop. No more than 10 children are allowed in the shops at any one time. If required 'goody bags' can be prepared for you - please ask for details.
- All staff and volunteers will either be in uniform or wearing name badges and the Duty Inspector is in overall charge of the site.
- Your coach driver receives free entry and a meal if required.
