Winner of 'Best Volunteer' Award

Best VolunteerAlan Barber, volunteer at Crich Tramway Village (CTV) in Derbyshire is celebrating today after winning the Best Volunteer award at the prestigious Excel Tourism Awards following a ceremony held at Chatsworth House yesterday evening.

The awards were set up by Visit Peak District & Derbyshire to recognise and reward outstanding individuals who have made a difference to the local tourism industry.

“Thrilled to bits”, was the reaction from Alan Barber who has been a member of the Tramway Museum Society at Crich Tramway Village since 1990 and undertakes roles from Duty Inspector to Chief Project Officer. “It is a real honour to be the recipient of the Best Volunteer award.”

Alan was chosen for the award because he has a great love and dedication for the Museum. He very much enjoys talking to visitors and ensuring that they have a good time. He has a flair for enthusing and inspiring others and has built a team of volunteers that go the extra mile.

Alan who is 59 and lives in Sheffield was accompanied to the award ceremony by his wife Ruth, also a volunteer at CTV; in fact it was at the Museum where they both met back in 1996. They have both recently been working on preparations for a new ‘Century of Trams’ exhibition at the Museum which has been taking up much of their spare time.
